When HCPT phoned we agreed to have a meeting and then see what happened. When Roxy and Charlie visited us at home, Nathan was obviously very comfortable and excited, the leaders must have felt the same as they said he had a place if everyone was happy. Nathan had two carers appointed and they both came round for a few visits, everyone had great fun.
We had another home visit from the group nurse (Charlie) and doctor (Nick). There were lots of questions from both sides which put us even more at ease. We discussed Nathans medical and physical needs in great depth, as even at home managing his condition can be a struggle. We had to be certain there was an emergency plan in case Nathan became unwell.
On the day they left, even though we were still very tentative, we took Nathan to meet the coach very early in the morning. He went off very happy and excited and we had a text when they had arrived safely.
Over the next few days we had many calls to confirm various things about Nathans diet and meds as too much protein can put him into coma into as little as two hours. We had to be certain they were doing everything right to try and avoid problems.
Nathan became poorly whilst he was away and even after putting him onto his rescue feed plan (which we do when he’s ill), he didn’t seem to get better. It was decided to fly Nathan back early and get him admitted into hospital where he could get the treatment he needed. Although the hospital in France could have helped Nathan, everyone was of the opinion that translations between hospitals could pose further threat and he would be better off back in England. Dr Nick flew back with him, administering medication during the flight and communicated with the emergency services in England so that an ambulance would be waiting on the runway. We met Dr Nick and Nathan at hospital nearest to Gatwick and after treatment we managed to get him transferred to Winchester where he recovered and was soon back to normal.
Although Nathan was very poorly towards the end of the trip he really enjoyed his visit to Lourdes. It was lovely to hear how caring and helpful he was towards the other children. It was great for him to be able to experience such a different way of life and to meet so many different people. Each night there were photos on the website of the days’ activities and all the children looked so happy having fun.
The whole episode was very scary, however, the doctors, nurses and carers from HCPT were absolutely amazing. They stayed with him every moment (even if he didn’t know it) and communication was excellent. We couldn’t have asked for more caring, thorough treatment. If anyone gets invited to go to Lourdes with group 170 we would definitely recommend it. |
