Join us as a Helper

HCPT relies on thousands of volunteer helpers to provide care for the special children they take to Lourdes each year. These helpers come from all walks of life, all ages and a variety of previous experience in caring for children. The most important characteristic of a helper is the willingness to do whatever is needed by the child in your care to ensure they have a fantastic pilgrimage.

Each helper will be responsible for the day to day care of one child for the week. Depending on the needs of the child, there may also be one or two other helpers assigned to your child, but there are also several people in the team who do not have a child of their own and so are able to help out with any of the children if more people are needed or if their regular helper is unwell. You will be responsible for making sure your child is up, washed and dressed in the morning, that they eat and drink during the day, that they are helped to the toilet or have their nappy changed, as appropriate, and most of all, that they have lots of fun! But you are not alone in all of this! There is a whole team of helpers, including doctors and nurses, and lots of sixth formers who travel out separately and are on hand to provide entertainment and friendship to the children during the day.

It does help if you have some experience of looking after children before, but this may just be having younger brothers and sisters, or babysitting, or maybe you are a parent yourself. You do not need to be a teacher or a nurse to give excellent care to these children. There will be lots of time before we travel to meet and get to know your child, and get used to their routines. We also all meet up as a group a few time before we go so that the children can meet each other and we can start to bond as a group.

Helpers are also asked to help out with the fundraising for the group, and this involves a variety of events which are usually great fun as a well as a bit of work! Helpers are expected to fund their own fare for the trip although some funding is available for people who may find this more difficult, and this can be discussed in confidence.
